Backgammon: Is it luck or skills?

It is a fact that the game of backgammon has been played throughout hundreds of years by various nations all over the world. Because the game is still popular after all this time goes to show that there is more to it than just a simple board and a dice. The set of rules that define the game are so easy to follow that even children are more than capable of mastering the art of backgammon.

Still, if the game is so easy, what does it take to win? I’m sure that most of us think that it’s all about a lucky hand; rolling the dice and being fortunate enough to get the right number is just a matter of fate and nothing more. Even if this is the case, why is that there have been studied various gaming techniques and strategies that can help and even improve a players game? These answers can only be found by watching a backgammon professional while he’s doing what he knows best.

Agreeing to the supposition that the game requires nothing more than luck is only half the truth. The other half lies in the way you move you pieces on the board and block your opponent. Although the purpose of the game is to remove all your pieces by doing a complete runaround, you still have to do so before your opponent. This is the place where strategy plays a vital part because you can either choose to continuously block the other player or try do to a running game.

These two strategies are the most commonly known and willingly or not, we all apply them. Consistent to the technique used to win the game is also the dice. Each player must be prepared to accept the fact that there is a margin for error when it comes to predicting the number shown after rolling the dice. Perhaps this unknown variable is what makes the game so captivating and addicting at the same time. The game can be totally unpredictable, giving each player a fair chance to the winning title.

As a conclusion, we can undoubtedly say that the game of backgammon requires both skills and luck in order to win; not necessarily in this order. Even if you win or lose this time, you can never be sure what the next game will bring you and for this you need to keep playing.
